ONION

by Verner Panton, 1977

Onion – the so called Onion pendant lamp in white from designer Verner Panton and manufacturer Verpan is a reminiscent of the plant shape. Single metal lamellae that run vertically to each other, are fixed at two rings – each bundled at the top and the bottom. As a re-design of the Yamagiwa, drafted in 1977 by Verner Panton, 30 years later the Onion was launched. From a huge number of white varnished metal lamellae vertically compound, her bulbous form reminds of an onion. Besides, the single stripe segments cover the heart of the lamp, the light source. Thus the lamellas are conceived differently illuminated and optain a mysterious depth. Artfully accompanying effect: The light is reflected and illuminates his surrounding in an unique way.

Onion Pendant light

The lamellae are arranged in three levels to the centrally placed light source. The thus created, inner lampshade covered skillfully the bulb without taking away too much light. The outer shell is formed by differently curved, concave-shaped segments. Their alternate arrangement around the optical core gives the Onion pendant lamp by Verpan its inimitable form and effect. Already in the off state, the Onion suspension lamp is attractive and unique. Switched on the pendant lamp gains a multiple of its three-dimensionality.

Perfectly shaped and artfully arranged – the ONION LARGE by VerPan is the taller sister of the Onion pendant designed by Verner Panton. The single white stripe segments cover the heart of the lamp, the light source. The fancy effect: The light is reflected and illuminates his surrounding in an unique way. The big Onion suspension lamp (Onion Big), with a diameter of 65 centimeters and a height of 90 centimeters, is ideal for use in high hallways, stairways or lobbies. Used as a solitary and hung low, an Onion Big constitutes a spotlight on single areas of the room. With a maximum fitting of 150 watts and in combination with a dimmer the sculptural lamp quickly becomes a cozy mood light.

Verner Panton drew his inspiration in part from the botany. In addition to the lighting family Onion and the Bellflower modeled Pantop lamp series, Panton was inspired by mushrooms as for example in the Panthella table and Panthella floor lamp or the New Wave table lamp.
